A recent survey of Pennsylvania’s 500 school districts found a staggering 472 (94%) of them have passed resolutions calling for meaningful cyber charter reform. This overwhelming consensus is not just a coincidence, but a clear sign that change needs to occur. In addition, Pennsylvania’s Auditor General released the findings of his cyber charter school performance audit, which uncovered a troubling pattern of egregious, wasteful and questionable financial practices. The result? An urgent need to update Pennsylvania’s outdated Charter School Law.
In response to this growing crisis, the PA House Education Committee convened statewide informational meetings targeting three key topics to better understand cyber charter performance and accountability: Student Outcomes; Costs of Cyber Charters to School Districts and Taxpayers; and Cyber Charter Governance. The testifiers included representatives from statewide and national education institutions, school administrators, representatives from PA cyber charter schools and a parent of a cyber charter student.
On this website, you will find videos, photos and full testimony from the informational meetings as well as coverage in the media on this subject; as well as legislation to be introduced that will provide transparency and accountability for PA’s cyber charter schools and reform how cyber charter education is funded in the Commonwealth.
