LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus shames Erie County Public Library

Calls for Pride book display to be replaced

ERIE, June 21 – Following the removal of a Pride-themed book display at the county library, the Pennsylvania House LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus co-chairs state Reps. Jessica Benham, D-Allegheny, and Malcolm Kenyatta, D-Phila., issued the following statement:

“The Erie County Public Library’s decision to dismantle a book display celebrating Pride feeds the false and hateful notion that LGBTQ+ individuals pose a threat to children. LGBTQ+ individuals should never have to hide who they truly are and books should not be censored simply because they contain LGBTQ+ characters.

“If the library is serious about its commitment to creating a ‘welcoming’ place for all and a ‘neutral’ space, it will replace the book display in its original location for the remainder of this Pride month. Removing the Pride display is not a neutral decision; it is one that sides with bigotry.”
