Schweyer: state money awarded to trail extension, replacing traffic signals

HARRISBURG, March 26 – State Rep. Peter Schweyer announced today that the City of Allentown will receive $500,000 from the state to invest in roadway safety for the community.
The grants were awarded from the Commonwealth Financing Authority’s Multimodal Transportation Fund to extend the MLK trail and replace traffic signals at three intersections along 17th street.
“These changes, while seemingly small, play a significant role into investing into the community,” Schweyer said. “The MLK trail is just one of many outdoor pursuits available in the Lehigh Valley. The extension will expand that offering and enable more people to enjoy it. Additionally, traffic signals are integral parts of road infrastructure. They bring order and coordination to our roadways and without them, the roads would be chaos. Investing in updated replacements keeps our roads safer, our communities safer and my constituents safer, and I am proud to have helped secure funding for these projects.”
The MTF provides grants to encourage economic development and ensure that a safe and reliable system of transportation is available to the residents of the commonwealth. Funds may be used for the development, rehabilitation and enhancement of transportation assets to existing communities, streetscape, lighting, sidewalk enhancement, pedestrian safety, connectivity of transportation assets and transit-oriented development.
The CFA was established in 2004 as an independent agency of the Department of Community and Economic Development to administer Pennsylvania’s economic stimulus packages.
