Haddock brings home $4.26 million for road, sewer projects

HARRISBURG, Jan. 20 – State Rep. Jim Haddock is pleased to announce that $4.26 million was awarded today for roadway improvements and sewer projects in portions of Lackawanna and Luzerne counties.

“These grants will help municipalities to complete important upgrades along area roads that otherwise might not be possible. Stormwater and sewer upgrades also will be feasible without raising local taxes thanks to the funding that was acquired today through the Commonwealth Financing Authority,” Haddock said.

“State Sen. Marty Flynn and I work collaboratively with the Shapiro administration and the CFA to ensure that they recognize the importance of these projects for our communities.”

Haddock said Multimodal Transportation Fund Program grants were awarded to:

  • GLI Moosic LLC: $900,000 toward roadway improvements at the intersection of Birney and Springbrook avenues to support the development of a gas station/convenience store.
  • Pittston Township: $476,600 to make pavement improvements to multiple roads.
  • Taylor Borough: $450,000 to replace sidewalks, curbs and street lighting along Main and Union streets.
  • Glenburn Township: $250,000 to make improvements to the road and sidewalk on South Waterford Street.
  • Avoca Borough: $250,000 to install streetlights along Main Street.
  • City of Pittston: $100,000 for streetscape improvements on Plank Street.

The MTF, administered by the CFA, provides grants between $100,000 and $3 million to encourage economic development and ensure that a safe and reliable system of transportation is available to the residents of the commonwealth. Funds may be used for the development, rehabilitation and enhancement of transportation assets to existing communities, streetscape, lighting, sidewalk enhancement, pedestrian safety, connectivity of transportation assets and transit-oriented development.

Additionally, Haddock said Small Water & Sewer Program grants were awarded to:

  • Dalton Borough: $424,798 for stormwater rehabilitation.
  • Taylor Borough: $420,923 for the MS-4 improvement project.
  • Newton Township: $398,352 for a stormwater improvement project.
  • City of Pittston: $308,037 for the Blueberry Lane sewer project.
  • Duryea Borough: $278,341 for the Mitchell and Grove Street storm water drainage project.

The PA Small Water and Sewer Program, established in 2016, allows the CFA to award grants to municipalities and municipal authorities for water, sewer, storm water and flood control projects with a cost of between $30,000 and $500,000. The grants can assist with the construction, improvement, expansion, or rehabilitation or repair of a water supply system, sanitary sewer system and storm sewer system, or flood control projects.
