Haddock requests local PUC hearing on PPL rate hike request

HARRISBURG, Nov. 7 – State Rep. Jim Haddock believes residents of Lackawanna and Luzerne counties should have input regarding the latest rate hike requested by PPL Electric Utilities, and he has requested that the state Public Utility Commission hold a local public hearing.
“Families are already drowning under the rising costs of living, and many small business owners are struggling to stay competitive in this challenging economy. With a rate hike of this magnitude, 6.98% per month for residential bills, 5.31% for commercial customers, and 2.58% for industrial customers, your decision simply cannot be made without fully hearing from the communities most affected. Our homeowners receiving the highest increase is simply an unacceptable burden for these families,” Haddock wrote to PUC Chairman Steve DeFrank.
“It is imperative that the commission provide the people who will suffer these costs with a direct opportunity to testify on how this proposal will impact their daily lives and livelihoods.
“A local hearing in Luzerne or Lackawanna is necessary and would demonstrate the commission's continued commitment to fairness, transparency, and public accountability. Thank you for your attention to this matter and for ensuring that our region's residents and businesses are given the opportunity to be heard before any decision is made,” Haddock concluded.
Early this year, Haddock was successful in similarly requesting that the PUC hold a local public hearing regarding a rate hike request filed by UGI Utilities Inc.
