House OKs McNeill bill prohibiting early termination fees of leased vehicles for medical reasons

HARRISBURG, June 23 – State Rep. Jeanne McNeill announced today that her bill, H.B. 205, that would prohibit early termination fees on leased vehicles for medical reasons, has passed the PA House.

“Being diagnosed as medically unfit to drive is a life-altering experience,” said McNeill. “It is unfair for someone to bear the financial burden of paying off a lease and termination fees for a vehicle they can no longer drive legally, especially when their diagnosis will often lead to a loss of income due to them dealing with their health issues.”

If signed into law, H.B. 205 would only require a person returning the leased vehicle to be responsible for any damage incurred. It would also prohibit financing companies and dealerships from charging early termination fees or penalties, and people could not be held accountable for the remaining balance on the lease.

If a medical professional determines that a person is unfit to drive safely, the person must report that determination to PennDOT as required by law.

House Bill 205 now goes to the state Senate for consideration.
