Probst holding Gun Safety Town Hall on May 29

HARRISBURG, May 13 – State Rep. Tarah Probst invites residents to join her for a May 29 town hall meeting to discuss ways to prevent gun violence.

The free event, co-hosted by The Community Partnership for Gun Safety, will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. May 29 at the Stroudsburg Junior High School Auditorium, 1901 Chipperfield Drive, Stroudsburg.

“This is an opportunity for everyone to get together to talk about one of the most vital issues facing our communities -- keeping people safe. I look forward to the discussion on this important topic and I hope to see a packed auditorium,” said Probst, D-Monroe/Pike.

From 2011 to 2020, Monroe County reported a 24.3% increase in weapons cases. In 2021, there were 47 weapons cases and 575 gun violence incidents reported, encompassing a range of violent activities, including murders, shootings, death by suicide, domestic violence and more.

Responding to community concerns over firearm violence, county officials, including the Monroe County Commissioners and the District Attorney’s Office, initiated a community needs assessment on firearm violence. Supported by grant funding from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency under the Gun Violence Investigation and Prosecution Grant Program, the initiative aims to develop a strategic plan to mitigate the identified issues.

As a part of the strategic plan, Monroe County established The Community Partnership for Gun Safety program to help address some of the concerns regarding firearm violence and mental health. The program is co-coordinated by retired school superintendent Dr. John A. Toleno and retired police officer John Jakobsen, a veteran of the Gulf War.

“The Mission of CPGS is to save lives and reduce the harm caused by firearms and gun violence in our community through advocacy and partnerships that provide education, support and resources,” Probst said.

Probst said part of the discussion will focus on how people should safely store their weapons.

RSVPs are not required to attend. Anyone who would like more information about the event should contact Probst’s office at 570-420-2850 or RepProbst@pahouse.net.
