ALLENTOWN, April 16 – State Rep. Josh Siegel issued the following statement on the Allentown LGBTQ+ resolution ahead of tonight’s city council meeting in Allentown:
“I’m calling on Allentown City Council and the city administration to speak with a unified and unanimous voice tonight in declaring Allentown a city that respects and acknowledges everyone’s dignity and humanity. Allentown must declare itself a safe haven for the LGBTQ+ community. At a time when cowardly and craven politicians are targeting and dehumanizing the LGBTQ+ community as a way to distract from a broader agenda of cruelty, chaos and corruption, it’s important that local officials demonstrate the courage to push back on this narrative. Efforts to advance and promote equality, inclusion and opportunity for one community, does not ignore or diminish the hardship of others. As a brother of a trans sister and son of an out gay man, I believe we have a chance to show families like mine, who watch the news with endless anxiety that in the Lehigh Valley there is a place for them, that love is love and everyone has a right to be who they are.
“This is not a zero-sum game; we can have a world with abundant housing, health care, good union jobs and a strong middle class and make sure that no one faces barriers in accessing it. It has never been they/them versus you, it is us versus economic elites, it is us versus Musk. We must stand together in solidarity with all those targeted and attacked by a wealthy elite whose mission is to protect their power and wealth by dividing our society.”
