McAndrew urges action on public transit funding bill

HARRISBURG, Aug. 6 – Following today’s successful vote on H.B. 1788 in the House Transportation Committee, which yet again moves forward a plan to address mass transit funding, chair of the House Subcommittee on Public Transportation state Rep. Joe McAndrew, D-Allegheny, who was in attendance issued the following statement:

“Public transit systems like Pittsburgh Regional Transit, Westmoreland Transit, IndiGO in Indiana County, and all our regional transit systems are economic drivers for the region. They are a key part on how our region operates and moves people to their job, to their grocery store and to their doctor’s office. Our public transit systems are at a breaking point. Without a real funding solution, PRT and agencies across the state are being forced to consider deep service cuts, layoffs, and fare increases. That puts riders, workers, and communities at serious risk.

“I’ve consistently voted to support public transportation funding, and House Democrats have shown up with real solutions. We’ve taken action. Meanwhile, the Senate keeps moving the goalposts.

“Every delay threatens the future of public transit in Pennsylvania. The House is doing its part and it’s time for the Senate to do theirs. We can’t afford to wait any longer.”
