Rep. La’Tasha D. Mayes, D-Allegheny, has announced $3 million in grant funding from the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency, which will support multiple renovation projects within her district, the 24th Legislative District.

Mayes said that the following projects in her district have been awarded funding:

  • $125,000 to Amani Christian Community Development Corp. to construct four modern high-efficiency, for-sale residential units on vacant, underutilized land.
  • $150,000 to Allen Enterprises and Development LLC for the renovation of a mixed-use building for commercial and apartment space.
  • $200,000 to Rising Tide Partners in East Hills to provide affordable homes to five first-time homebuyers.

  • $200,000 to Pennsylvania Affordable Housing Corp. for the renovation of the former El Court apartment complex to create affordable rental units for low-income families who are experiencing homelessness or who have special needs.
  • $200,000 to Za’kiyah Houses for the Apartments at The Sanctuary which will create three affordable units within its existing community resource hub, providing safe, supportive housing.
  • $200,000 to Women for a Healthy Environment for The Healthy Homes Stabilization Fund, which is a rapid-response emergency repair program that provides small but critical health and safety fixes for low- to moderate-income households.
  • $100,000 to Pittsburgh Housing Development Corp. for the Camp Street Row Project, which will rehabilitate two long-vacant row houses in a historically disadvantaged Black community that has faced years of disinvestment.

“We’re excited and thankful that these organizations are receiving funding for important projects that will support affordable housing efforts our community,” Mayes said. “Initiatives that provide support and programs for people experiencing homelessness, and low-income individuals truly deserve this support. I’m eager to continue helping more organizations in my district obtain the funding they need for future projects.”

Funding for these Pennsylvania Housing Affordability and Rehabilitation Enhancement Fund awards comes from two main sources. Since 2012, the program has received a portion of the impact fees collected from natural gas companies operating in the state with the goal of addressing the housing shortage caused by the impact of drilling. That is supplemented with funding provided by a portion of the realty transfer tax. The PHARE fund is often referred to as the state’s Housing Trust Fund.
