Mayes to distribute donations to expecting, new parents

47% of American families report that they are in need of diapers

PITTSBURGH, April 2 – In celebration of Black Maternal Health Week, state Rep. La’Tasha D. Mayes will partner with Healthy Start Pittsburgh to distribute donations to families expecting and new parents with children up to 1-year-old from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 13 at Mt. Ararat Community Activity Center, 745 N. Negley Ave. in East Liberty.

“The birth of a child should be a joyous occasion and parent should have what they need for their babies when they enter the world,” Mayes said. “While my partner Heather and I were lucky to have our family and friends and my colleagues in Harrisburg host multiple baby showers, every mom or parent does not necessarily have that level of support or can afford every they need. That’s why I partnered with Healthy Start Pittsburgh, the leading Black maternal health organization in western Pennsylvania, to distribute diapers, wipes and other baby supplies to expecting parents and new parents. Together, we must work to aid Pennsylvanians in need, starting from birth.”

Mayes said residents may donate baby supplies identified on her registry or drop them off from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday until Thursday, April 11 at Mayes’ district office, 2015-2017 Centre Ave., Floor 1, Pittsburgh, PA 15219. Her office will accept the following items:

  • Baby clothing from ages newborn to 12 months (new, used, or gently used).
  • Bath products and toiletries.
  • Blankets and bedding.
  • Bottles and pacifiers.
  • Breastfeeding products.
  • Diapers.
  • Diaper bags.
  • Towels and burp cloths.
  • Wipes.

To register, visit Mayes’ website or call 412-665-5502.
