Black Breastfeeding Week Pittsburgh Celebration Tonight!
|
Celebrate national Black Breastfeeding Week with the Pittsburgh Black Breastfeeding Circle tonight, August 28, 5:00-7:30PM at YWCA Pittsburgh in Homewood! This year’s theme is “Boot on the Ground: Rooted in Breastfeeding Success, Grounded in Community Support” to encourage and support Black mamas and birthing people on their breastfeeding journey.
|
Breastfeeding is deeply connected to Black maternal health. This week uplifts the importance and positive impacts of breastfeeding for Black mamas, birthing people and babies. Learn about how the PA Black Maternal Health Caucus and I are moving legislation on breastfeeding in our PA MOMNIBUS 2.0 at pahouse.com/BMH/Legislation.

Big Changes Coming to SNAP Food Program
|
Significant changes are coming to the SNAP food program that could cut off food assistance for many Pennsylvanians. Beginning September 1, more than 230,000 SNAP recipients in Pennsylvania will be subject to new work requirements to maintain their benefits as a result of the federal “Big Beautiful Bill.” SNAP recipients who do not comply will be limited to receiving SNAP benefits for only three months within a three-year period.
There are exemptions in the law that allow some people to maintain their benefits, and my office and the Department of Human Services (DHS) can help you navigate these changes. For more information, visit the DHS Website or call them at 800-692-7462. You can call my office at 412.665.5502.
|
In observance of Labor Day, my office is going to be closed tomorrow August 29 and closed all day Monday, September 1st. We will be back to serve you Tuesday, September 2 at 9:00AM.

Property Tax/Rent Rebate Application Deadline Extended
|
You can apply for a rebate on property taxes or rent you paid in 2024. Last session, we passed landmark legislation that allowed more Pennsylvanians than ever before to qualify for a rebate. Then, we took another step forward by increasing the maximum annual income from $45,000 to $46,520.
This program is for seniors 65 or older; widows and widowers 50 or older; and people with disabilities 18 or older. For more information, to see if you qualify and to apply, contact my office at 412.665.5502 or click here. The application deadline has been extended until Dec. 31.

Summer break shouldn’t mean empty plates. SUN Bucks provides $120 per eligible child on a prepaid EBT card to help families cover grocery costs when school is out. Children already on SNAP are automatically enrolled, and households not currently receiving SNAP may still qualify.
Visit dhs.pa.gov/SUNBucks to check eligibility, explore program resources, and submit your application.
Benefits for Summer 2025 will begin issuing in mid-July. Apply by Aug. 31, 2025, to make sure your children get the support they need.
