Local schools receive $957,000 in school safety grants

HARRISBURG, April 26 – State Rep. Bridget Kosierowski said $957,000 in safety grants were awarded this week to local schools by the School Safety and Security Committee of the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency.

“Kids should feel safe when they are at school so they can concentrate on learning. It’s unfortunate that we need to provide this type of support to our schools, but this is the world we live in. Because of that reality, I am always ready to vote yes to fund these programs,” said Kosierowski, D-Lackawanna.

Competitive safety grant recipients in Kosierowski’s 114th Legislative District include:

  • Scranton School District: $450,000.
  • Lakeland School District: $113,000.

Nonpublic school safety grant awardees are:

  • Discovery Montessori: $75,000.
  • La Salle Academy: $25,000.
  • Nativity Miguel School of Scranton: $75,000.
  • Our Lady of Peace School: $75,000.
  • Scranton Preparatory School: $75,000.
  • Summit Christian Academy: $69,000.

During the 2023-24 fiscal year, a total of $155 million in federal and state school safety funding has been approved by the School Safety and Security Committee of PCCD. This week’s grants were awarded under the competitive grant program and to nonpublic schools.
