Kazeem invites community members to local cemetery restoration project
Skilled laborers and food sponsorships particularly needed

CHESTER, Oct. 2 – State Rep. Carol Kazeem, D-Delaware, is inviting community members and entrepreneurs to her cemetery cleanup event next weekend in advance of Veterans Day 2023.
Kazeem’s office has organized a restoration project for the Greenlawn Cemetery in conjunction with Friends of Greenlawn Cemetery and local military members. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 14 at the cemetery, 2501 Concord Road, in Aston.
Volunteers are welcomed to join, but Kazeem’s said she is specifically looking for help from landscapers, food sponsorships and those who have experience operating restoration equipment. Anyone interested in participating should contact Nicole Cogdell at ncogdell@pahouse.net.
“Money was never set aside for Greenlawn Cemetery’s long-term care and maintenance needs. It’s a shame how easily old cemeteries seem to be forgotten about,” Kazeem said. “That’s why I’m so excited to have a group of people together ready to beautify this historic place, and we’re looking for more skilled laborers to join us so we can have an even larger impact.”
This event is part of a series leading up to Veterans Day. Details on Kazeem’s Veterans Day events happening on Nov. 11 are as follows:
- 10 a.m. - Veterans Breakfast and Resource Fair at the Upper Chichester Municipal Building, 8400 Furey Road.
- 1:30 p.m. - Cemetery restoration unveiling and buffalo soldier re-enactment at Greenlawn Cemetery.
- 3 p.m. - “Women of Color in the U.S. Military” service presentation at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, 101 Washington Ave.
- Hometown Hero banner unveiling, location TBD.
