House recognizes October 2026 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Pennsylvania through bipartisan resolution

HARRISBURG, Oct. 8 – On Wednesday, the House of Representatives voted to pass a bipartisan resolution to recognize October 2026 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Pennsylvania.

House Resolution 638, introduced by state Reps. Carol Hill-Evans, D-York, and Sheryl Delozier, R-Cumberland, was put forward to inform and educate the public about domestic violence, its prevalence in this commonwealth, its impact on victims and families, and the various resources available to help and protect victims.

“According to the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence, one in three women and one in four men experience domestic violence in their lifetimes,” said Hill-Evans, chair of the State Government Committee. “Additionally, PCADV reports that more than 1,400 people were killed in this commonwealth over the past decade because of domestic violence. This is a trend that needs to change.”

“As someone who has escorted survivors, answered crisis hotline calls and served on the board of a local non-profit, I have seen the profound and lasting impact of domestic violence,” Delozier said. “Domestic violence is not a private issue; it is a community issue that can reach into any home.”

Additionally, the stress and trauma experienced by victims of domestic violence can lead to depression, feelings of hopelessness, sadness, withdrawal from social interactions, or even suicide.

“As elected officials, we have an opportunity and an obligation to raise awareness and provide resources to support and protect victims of domestic violence,” Hill-Evans said. “I am proud to stand with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to do just that.”
