Urges Congress to act
Rep. Patrick J. Harkins June 5, 2023 | 5:34 PM
HARRISBURG, June 5 – The PA House State Government Committee today approved state Rep. Pat Harkins’ resolution urging Congress to declare Patriots’ Day a federal holiday.
Harkins, D-Erie, said the holiday – commemorated in several northeast states – needs to become a national observance.
“On April 19, 1775, the Battles of Lexington and Concord and the famous ‘Shot Heard ‘Round the World’ launched the American Revolution,” Harkins said. “Nearly 250 years later, we are still fiercely committed to protecting liberty and fighting tyranny.
“Our neighbors to the northeast in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Maine commemorate these battles on the third Monday of April each year as Patriots’ Day. It’s time for Pennsylvania and the rest of nation to join them in recognizing the crucial role these events played in our nation’s independence. We should urge Congress to declare Patriots’ Day a federal holiday.”
The resolution now heads to the House floor.
