State House adopts Haddock resolution honoring Marines

HARRISBURG, Oct. 30 – The state House of Representatives on Wednesday adopted a resolution (H.R. 355) sponsored by Rep. Jim Haddock to commemorate the 250th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps on Nov. 10.

On Nov. 10, 1775, the Second Continental Congress established the Continental Marines, and Capt. Samuel Nicholas established the first recruiting headquarters at the Tun Tavern on Water Street in Philadelphia. Following the Revolutionary War, the Marine Corps was formally established in 1798, and the establishment of the Marine Corps Reserve followed later in 1916.

“It is fitting that we celebrate the vast achievements and sacrifices of the United States Marine Corps, and the role of Pennsylvania in the history of the Marines,” said Haddock, a member of the House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee.

Haddock said around 175,000 active-duty Marines and 33,000 reserve members serve the nation with honor, courage and commitment.

“We thank the Marines and all branches of the military for their dedication to our country and our security,” said Haddock, D-Luzerne/Lackawanna. “We also recognize the sacrifices that their families must endure during their loved ones’ deployment overseas.”

Pennsylvania has one of the largest veteran populations as nearly 700,000 veterans call the state home.

The state provides a variety of programs for veterans and their families. More information may be found here.
