Harrisburg Happenings

Protecting Pennsylvania Health Services and Facilities

This week, the PA House Health Committee advanced the Protecting Pennsylvania Health Services and Facilities Act , a major step toward stopping reckless hospital takeovers that put Pennsylvanians’ health at risk.

Across the Commonwealth, we’ve seen an unmistakable trend: private equity-backed mergers that lead to unit closures, staff cuts, and full hospital shutdowns—often in already underserved areas. These decisions leave entire communities without access to vital care.

Right now, our Attorney General’s office lacks the tools to properly review and regulate these transactions. Our bill fixes that by empowering the AG to protect patients, not just profits. I was proud to stand with the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals (PASNAP) to move this important legislation forward.

LGBTQ+ Rights, Protecting Workers from Secondhand Smoke, and Gun Violence Prevention

As Pride Month begins, I joined my colleagues in the LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus to reintroduce the Fairness Act, legislation that would finally outlaw discrimination against LGBTQ+ Pennsylvanians in housing, employment, and public accommodations. I started introducing the Fairness Act more than 20 years ago, and I won’t stop fighting until every Pennsylvanian is protected under the law.

I also stood with the United Auto Workers to rally for my bill, the Protecting Workers from Secondhand Smoke Act, and their other legislative priorities for this session.

Pennsylvania’s Clean Indoor Air Act leaves far too many workers behind—bartenders, casino dealers, and club staff who are still forced to breathe toxic air to earn a paycheck. That’s not just unfair—it’s dangerous. This bill will close loopholes and protect workers’ rights to breathe clean air on the job.

Finally, I joined CeaseFirePA to call for $100 million in this year’s budget for community-led violence prevention. Gun violence has taken too many lives, but we’ve seen the impact of investing in what works—like in Pittsburgh, where gun homicides dropped 41% last year. These programs save lives and taxpayer dollars.

We must match our values with action. Whether it's protecting workers, affirming equality, or saving lives from gun violence, I’m committed to building a safer, fairer, healthier Pennsylvania for all.

Boulder, Colorado

Following a horrifying antisemitic firebombing attack on peaceful demonstrators in Boulder, Colorado, the Pennsylvania Jewish Legislative Caucus condemned this violence and demanded action.

Unfortunately, this is part of a broader, disturbing pattern. Antisemitic incidents are surging nationwide and here in Pennsylvania—from hateful flyers in Squirrel Hill to disturbing displays in Philadelphia.

The Jewish Legislative Caucus is urging the General Assembly to expand funding for the Nonprofit Security Grant Fund and pass my package of bills to strengthen our anti-hate crimes laws. When antisemitism is tolerated, it turns deadly. We cannot be complacent.
