Harrisburg Happenings

Supporting Magee Hospital’s Nurses and Advanced Practitioners

Yesterday, I joined the nurses and advanced practitioners—which includes certified nurse midwives, nurse practitioners, and other professionals- of Magee Hospital to announce their intentions to unionize. A substantial majority of over 1,000 nurses and advanced practitioners petitioned for a union election to negotiate a contract to improve work conditions, benefits, and create safer staffing ratios for hospital staff.

UPMC has millions for executive compensation and corporate jets—but not for the nurses holding the system together. It’s past time RNs and advanced practice professionals had a real seat at the table through unionizing.

Any anti-union campaign wastes precious resources, places additional stress on an already overburdened workforce, and distracts from the delivery of essential patient care. I’m calling on UPMC to agree to a free and fair election without any delays or interference whatsoever.

New Distracted Driving Law Takes Effect June 5

Beginning next week, Pennsylvania drivers will be prohibited from using hand-held cell phones while behind the wheel. Act 18 of 2024, known as Paul Miller’s Law, goes into effect on Wednesday, June 5, and is designed to curb the dangerous and often deadly consequences of distracted driving.

Under the new law, drivers may not use hand-held devices while their vehicle is in motion or temporarily stopped—such as at red lights or in traffic. Hands-free technology may still be used to make calls, use GPS, or listen to music, and emergency calls are permitted.

Senior Farmers Market Vouchers

Due to the Trump administration’s reckless cuts in federal funding, Pennsylvania’s Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program was forced to scale back for the 2025 season.

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture announced that senior agencies will receive only about three-quarters of the vouchers they requested. In Allegheny County alone, that means 90,255 checks instead of the 120,000 our seniors need and deserve. Deliveries will also be delayed by about two weeks, due in part to a lack of clarity from Washington about the program.

I share in the anger and frustration of everyone impacted, and I remain committed to fighting for food access, dignity, and basic decency for our most vulnerable neighbors—no matter how dysfunctional things get in D.C.
