Kosierowski, Donahue secure $1.93 million through Main Street Matters program

HARRISBURG, April 8 – State Reps. Bridget M. Kosierowski and Kyle T. Donahue are pleased to announce that $1.93 million in Main Street Matters funding was awarded by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development for projects in Lackawanna County.

“Improving the community and housing is essential not only for my residents but also for neighboring areas across Lackawanna County,” said Kosierowski. “I am a big supporter of the Pine Brook Revitalization Plan that is spearheaded by United Neighborhood Centers in partnership with NeighborWorks. This funding will assist with the acquisition and preparation of sites in Pine Brook that will provide for better housing options along this vital corridor.”

“Funding for our Main Streets is essential to revitalizing our neighborhoods in the city of Scranton to spur investment in our aging housing stock and improve quality of life for our residents.” said Donahue. “It is an honor to work alongside tremendous partners like United Neighborhood Centers and NeighborWorks that do great work every day to address the needs of residents throughout Lackawanna County. I am proud to work alongside Rep. Kosierowski and Sen. Marty Flynn to help secure funding for these revitalization and rehabilitation efforts.”

Projects to be funded include:

  • $1 million to the city of Scranton for the Clover Field Rehabilitation and Development project.
  • $50,000 to NeighborWorks Northeastern Pennsylvania for the 115 N. Main Avenue Design project.
  • $477,000 to the United Neighborhood Community Development Corp. for Pine Brook – 601 Capouse Avenue Site Acquisition.
  • $403,806 to the United Neighborhood Community Development Corp. for Pine Brook – 601 Capouse Avenue Site Preparation.

Kosierowski said the Pine Brook project will provide for decent, affordable housing for low- to moderate-income individuals and families in Scranton. She added the project will also complement the ongoing revitalization efforts that are invigorating Scranton’s Pine Brook neighborhood and improve the economic, social, and aesthetic standing of the neighborhood while adding 41 needed affordable, quality apartments.

Donahue said funding for the 115 N. Main Ave Design Project and the Rehabilitation of Clover Field will continue to advance the goals set forth in the West Scranton Neighborhood Plan that aims to improve on the community character and commercial corridors of West Scranton by strengthening connections and enhancing community anchors to improve the quality of life for residents of West Scranton.

The Main Street Matters program, which has helped cities and towns across Pennsylvania repair historic buildings, improve pedestrian safety, and provide direct support to small businesses, helps revitalize downtown areas, helps businesses grow, and overall improves community infrastructure.
