Curry applauds over $600,000 in grants to Upper Darby schools

HARRISBURG, May 22 – State Rep. Gina H. Curry, D-Delaware, announced this week that two schools in the Upper Darby School District were awarded a combined $682,501 through the PA Solar for Schools Grant Program.

Stonehurst Elementary on Ruskin Lane and Bywood Elementary on Avon Road received individual grants:

  • Bywood Elementary, $323,213
  • Stonehurst Elementary, $359,288

The Solar for Schools Grant Program was created in July 2024 to reduce the cost of implementing solar energy systems into schools across the state. School districts, intermediate units, charter schools, technical schools and community colleges are eligible for the program. The funding may cover the purchase and installation of equipment, permit fees, energy storage and utility interconnection.

“Investing in renewable energy for our schools is a smart, cost-saving and sustainable approach to powering our schools,” Curry said. “It’s exciting to see this program in action, and I look forward to seeing how our students benefit not just from the technology, but from learning about how it works and how it supports them and their environment.”

The Commonwealth Financing Authority is an independent agency that administers the Solar for Schools Grant Program, as well as other state economic stimulus packages.
