Hello Neighbors, Community Members and Friends,
|
|
I’m proud to share that this week my bill pushing for a Keystone Exam Alternative Feasibility Study passed the House with bipartisan support!
Those of you who are parents or who were high school students in the last 14 years know that the Keystone Exams test students on their end-of-course knowledge in several high school subjects. You may also know there has been some controversy about whether the exams accurately represent student achievement and that they can be costly for schools to administer.
If my bill passes the PA Senate (its next step in the process!), the Department of Education will be required to undertake an independent study of the Keystone Exams and whether other aptitude tests, like the SAT and ACT, could be used instead. Giving schools more flexibility can save them money in the long run and potentially make administering these assessments easier.
Education evolves over time, and I believe we should allow the ways we measure benchmarks to evolve as well.

Celebrating small business
|
Last week, we joined forces with SEPTA to host a small business fair at the Twentieth Century Club in Lansdowne. We celebrated local entrepreneurs and business owners, and SEPTA provided information about procurement opportunities.
When our local businesses thrive, our local economies prosper—I love being able to bring these kinds of events to you!

A successful Youth Career Fair
|
We had over 20 organizations participate in last weekend’s Youth Career Fair at Beverly Hills Middle School! They offered activities for young people as well as information about career readiness and first jobs and summer jobs. I am so proud of all the youth who came to explore and begin figuring out where you want to go in the future!

After a remarkable career dedicated to Pennsylvania's children and families, Donna Cooper steps into a well-earned retirement. As a driving force at Children's First, Donna championed bold policies that expanded access to quality education, strengthened child welfare, and lifted up the voices of the Commonwealth's most vulnerable young people.
Her tireless advocacy, sharp intellect, and fierce compassion turned ideas into lasting change.
Thank you, Donna. Your work matters. Your impact endures.
