Hello Neighbors, Community Members and Friends,
|
|
As our community continues to navigate the hardship caused by the federal government shutdown and the temporary halt of SNAP benefits, our office remains deeply committed to standing in the gap for those most affected. We know the pain and uncertainty this has caused for families across our district, and we want you to know you are not alone.
Now is the time to check in on one another and strengthen the bonds that make our community resilient. Whether it’s buying in bulk and sharing with a neighbor, hosting a community dinner, setting up a porch pantry, or volunteering at a local food site, every act of compassion helps ease the burden.
To help meet immediate needs, our office is collecting nonperishable food items that will be distributed to local food pantries serving families across Upper Darby, Lansdowne, East Lansdowne, Millbourne, and Drexel Hill. We invite you to drop off donations during business hours and join us in ensuring no one in our community goes hungry.
Meanwhile, Governor Shapiro has filed a lawsuit to release the federal SNAP funds currently being held up by the shutdown — an important step to provide relief to the families most impacted by this crisis.
Locally, our team is preparing for the Winter Resource Fair on Friday, November 8, where residents can connect with vital community partners, access resources, and receive support for food, housing, energy, health, and more. This event is one more way we’re helping our community weather difficult times together.
Even amid challenge, there have been bright moments of progress and purpose this week. You can read more about these events below.
Through it all — the victories and the valleys — our focus remains the same: to serve, protect, and uplift our community. Together, we will continue standing in the gap until every family has the security, resources, and dignity they deserve.
In steadfast care and service,
Rep. Gina H. Curry

We also want to share that LIHEAP (energy assistance) has been delayed until December 3, pending federal action. Recognizing the urgency of this situation, I joined my fellow legislators in signing a letter urging the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) to pause utility terminations for LIHEAP-eligible households until the program opens. For so many of our most vulnerable neighbors, LIHEAP is literally lifesaving. The letter also calls on utilities to pause terminations, restore disconnected service, and arrange equitable payment plans during this critical time.

n Harrisburg, I celebrated the 2-year anniversary of the Pennsylvania Black Maternal Health Caucus, and everything we’ve been striving for since our founding in 2023! I’m so deeply grateful to my co-founders Rep. La’Tasha D. Mayes and Rep. Morgan Cephas for their collaboration and sisterhood, to our legislative partners for their continued support, and to all of you for sharing your voices, stories, and needs — helping us make pregnancy and motherhood better for every birthing person in Pennsylvania.
To commemorate this milestone, we hosted an Advocacy Day at the Capitol featuring a press conference and storytelling reception celebrating the vital work of midwives and maternal care advocates. Expanding midwifery access remains a key part of our efforts to close the maternal care gap across Pennsylvania.
|
At Monday morning’s press conference we stood with the March of Dimes to show our support for access to midwifery at all births in Pennsylvania. I believe that expanding the role of midwives in our state will give them greater ability to offer comprehensive care. Our state is in a maternity care crisis, with many areas lacking providers for maternal care and birth. Giving midwives the ability to provide more care helps solve this problem, and I’m looking forward to advocating for legislation designed to close the gap. Watch my remarks here:

Giving Midwives More Care Authority
|
Part of the Black Maternal Health Caucus’s package of MOMNIBUS bills, my legislation H.B. 1251 was amended and passed out of committee this week. The bill would allow nurse midwives to make referrals for pelvic floor physical therapy and to sign fetal death certificates. I look forward to seeing it move to the House for consideration. Watch my committee remarks here:

On Tuesday, I joined some of my peers in supporting the community health workers who play a vital role in connected our residents to essential care and resources. Community health workers provide guidance on health-related issues to communities, help patients communicate with providers, provide health education, and more. You can learn more about community health worker certification here.

Thank You to Head Start for 60 Years Serving Our Youth

Head Start has been providing our low income communities with school-readiness programs for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers for 60 years! Congratulations, and thank you for everything you do!

The Foundation for Delaware County recently launched Family Village, a centralized hub where families can get services from pregnancy through early childhood. Through Family Village, case workers, community health organizers, doulas, nurses, and social workers all work together. The goal is to give community members easier access to these family care providers.
Family Village hosted a launch event to celebrate, and I was happy to attend alongside other lawmakers from our area.

Our Community Baby Shower and
Mammogram Events Were a Great Success!
|
Last week Sen. Tim Kearney and I hosted two community events to support the women and families of Delaware County. On Friday we brought Jefferson Health’s Mobile Mammogram Clinic to Barclay Square for another round of free annual mammograms. I was pleased to see so many of you put your health first!
On Saturday, we hosted a Community Baby Shower at Beverly Hills Middle School. The turnout for this event was huge, and I was honored to be able to connect you with so many of the great local resources we have for expecting and new families. I look forward to supporting you in these and other ways as my term goes on.
