E-Blast: Important SNAP Changes & the second anniversary of the PA Black Maternal Health Caucus

Hello Neighbors, Community Members and Friends,

It’s been a busy week back in the district. With the ongoing federal shutdown and the significant delays in our Pennsylvania budget process, I know many of you have growing concerns about life’s essentials. Senator Tim Kearney and I share your concerns, and this past week, we held a news conference about the changes to SNAP work requirements that are important for you to understand.

Read more about the news conference and the changes to SNAP below.

As always, my office is here to help in any way we can. If the SNAP resources in this eblast aren’t clear to you, don’t hesitate to make an appointment with a member of my team by calling (610) 259-7016 or emailing RepCurry@pahouse.net. You can even stop by without an appointment from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. We’re located at 1500 Garrett Rd., Upper Darby, in the Barlcay Square Shopping Center.

Food is Dignity

On Tuesday, I partnered with State Senator Tim Kearney to host a news conference and community briefing on the new SNAP work requirements and the risk of losing food assistance. We were joined by Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, State Senator Arthur Haywood, and leaders from organizations across Southeast Pennsylvania that serve thousands of SNAP families.

These cuts don’t just hurt the hungry—they ripple through our economy, impacting local grocery stores, food distributors, and Pennsylvania farmers who rely on that spending. When we cut SNAP, we choke our local economy. This is unacceptable. You can watch the news conference here.

Two Years of the PA Black Maternal Health Caucus

Today marks a milestone – the second anniversary of the Pennsylvania Black Maternal Health Caucus.

On October 17, 2023, our caucus was founded with a commitment to legislative action and community engagement alongside grassroots partners and advocates who have worked tirelessly to address the stark realities of maternal health in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

As one of the co-founders of the Black Maternal Health Caucus, I am deeply honored to continue this work of helping communities across Pennsylvania understand the urgent need, the challenges, and the support required to safeguard the maternal health journey.

In the midst of hospital closures, rising maternal mortality rates, and systemic inequities, our caucus remains focused on advancing policy change and confronting the root causes of the Black maternal health crisis.

The maternal health journey continues to evolve, and meaningful change happens when we work together, build solutions, and center the voices of those most impacted.

Happy Diwali!

Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, is coming up this Monday, October 20. To celebrate, the Khalsa Asian American Association held its second annual Diwali Celebration at Cardington Park in Upper Darby last weekend. The event featured delicious food, kids’ games, and music by Deep Sahota, KS Makhan, and Laddi Harpal. The association also honored me with an award recognizing my commitment to building a multicultural community here in Upper Darby.

I had a fantastic time at the celebration and am honored to play a role in making our neighborhoods welcoming for all. Thank you to the organizers for bringing our community together to celebrate!

Our Estate Planning Clinic

Thank you to everyone who attended our estate planning clinic yesterday! Estate planning can often feel overwhelming, and I was glad to host this event to help make the process easier.
