Hello Neighbors, Community Members and Friends,
|
|
Yesterday I hosted a PA House Majority Policy Committee hearing to find answers and hear from experts about what can be done to improve health outcomes for mothers and babies.
Across our state, too many of our mothers and babies are dying from conditions that are preventable and associated with lack of timely, quality maternal care. What we’re witnessing is a crisis that touches health care, economics, and racial injustice. No Pennsylvania family should ever have to worry if their ZIP code, their income, or the color of their skin determines whether their child survives their first year of life.
The hearing brought together legislators, public health officials, mothers, and leaders from the area’s top health organizations.
Today, I’m at Subaru Park in Chester for a Maternal and Infant Mortality Summit with Nemours Health and legislators and leaders from all over. The work I do with the PA Black Maternal Health Caucus is a core part of my mission as your legislator, and I am proud to be working toward solutions for our community, especially in the wake of the Crozer Health catastrophe.

Making Mental Health Services Better
|
On Wednesday, I participated in a roundtable hosted by the House Majority Policy Committee and Mental Health Caucus and toured portions of the campus of Norristown State Hospital, including walking through patient areas to see the state of the facilities first-hand. It is one of only two forensic mental health hospitals in PA, and it has plans to begin updating and modernizing some of its facilities next year.

Breakfast with the Delaware County
Transportation Management Association
|
I was invited to speak at a breakfast meeting hosted by the DCTMA this morning about critical transit funding and other transit issues that have been brought to the PA House. Thank you to DCTMA for the opportunity and for keeping the transit conversation going.

Pennsylvania Institute of Technology Opens Student CARE Center
|
PIT held a ribbon-cutting ceremony last week to celebrate the opening of its new Student CARE (Community Access to Resources and Essentials) Center, a space where students and their families can find free personal care products and baby items. The school knows that many of their students are pursuing their education while balancing families and employment. Over 85% of their students are women. I applaud PIT for their commitment to removing barriers to education in every way that they can.
If you’d like to donate to the CARE Center, donation drop-off locations are in and around Media:
• Rocky Run YMCA, 1299 W. Baltimore Pike.
• Media Fellowship House, 302 S. Jackson St.
• Earth & State, 23 W. State St.
• Deals Variety Store, 15 W. State St.
• Magic Threads Consignment Boutique, 211 W. State St., Suite 4.
• Unitarian Universalist Church of Delaware County, 145 W. Rose Tree Road.

Touring Xiente’s Mobile Preschool
|
I recently toured a preschool on wheels! Xiente’s Mobile Preschool – their Busesito – brings early childhood education programs directly to neighborhoods that have little or no access to traditional preschools. They offer kindergarten readiness right in their bus. I am impressed with the out-of-the-box thinking that brings ideas like this to life.
