Hello Neighbors, Community Members and Friends,
|
|
I was recently made aware through a news story on 6ABC about one of our elderly Upper Darby neighbors, Ms. Gaynor, who is losing her home because of unpaid property taxes. A tax lien was put on her home, and her tax debt was sold, along with her home. The family exhausted all avenues to help Gaynor, who is bedridden.
Unfortunately, all of this is legal under state law, and there may be many more Ms. Gaynors living in our community unaware of their unpaid property taxes and the consequences.
This is horrifying and unacceptable. I'm heartbroken that I was not made aware of Ms. Gaynor’s plight sooner so that my office could try to help.
That said, I cannot stand by.
First, I want to remind our community that my office is always here to help you, whether it's with senior issues or any other state or local issue. If you have a problem with your property taxes or with accessing resources and support for issues like housing, food assistance, and health insurance, we can help you understand options or connect you with programs that may help, like the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program. If you don't know where to turn for help, please call, email or stop by my office. We're here to talk you through the issues and possible solutions.
Second, I'm exploring how we can better inform the community and even try to address this through legislation. I've been in touch with the Governor's office and talked with my colleagues about possible legislative action so that crises like this don't happen again. I'm now working with the Governor's office to connect with the Attorney General, the Department of Aging, and other state agencies to get better resources to share with you.
Finally, my staff and I plan to do more outreach in the community, including planning a community event or events that bring together senior-focused resources for both seniors and caregivers.
I'm praying for Ms. Gaynor and her family and I'm working to reach out to her family to see if there's any way my staff and I can help.
And I'll never stop working for you. So please, never hesitate to reach out to my office with your issues, questions or concerns. You can call, email, or stop by to ask us any kind of question and we’ll do our best to problem-solve with you. We're here to help!
