Hello Neighbors, Community Members and Friends,
|
|
This past week has been heavy for so many in our community. Across Delaware County, families are grappling with the reality of looming federal cuts that threaten the supports they rely on every single day to feed their children, access health care, and ensure a quality public education.
With the signing of what's being called the "One Big Beautiful Bill," we are witnessing a policy that is anything but beautiful. This legislation tears at the very fabric of our safety net, slashing Medicaid, cutting SNAP, and pulling desperately needed dollars from our public schools.
Here in Delco, more than 110,000 residents depend on Medicaid, and 17,000 rely on SNAP to put food on the table. These cuts don't just hurt, they harm. They create impossible choices for working families and place our already underfunded school districts in crisis, especially when it comes to after-school programs, special education, mental health services, and school meals.
Once again, our communities, already doing so much with so little, are being asked to stretch even further, while federal policymakers turn their backs.
But I want you to know this: we are not sitting silently. We are fighting forward.
For the past six weeks, my colleagues and I in the PA House have been working tirelessly to secure a state budget that will protect and uplift you, even as federal support falls away. We know we may not be able to undo every cut, but we are doing everything we can to ensure Pennsylvania is ready to respond to help us weather the storm.
This week, we gathered in the Capitol Rotunda, parents, students, educators, legislators, raising our voices against this dangerous bill. In the video below, I share why this moment demands not only our outrage, but our action: Because our communities are worth fighting for. And we won't stop.

Representing the Black Maternal Health Caucus
at Essence Festival 2025!
|
Last weekend I was invited to attend and participate in a film screening and panel discussion around disparities in Black maternal mortality in the United States at the 2025 ESSENCE Festival of Culture in New Orleans! The film, The Ebony Canal, is directed by the talented Emmai Alaquia and addresses the topic head-on. I am so honored to have been able to talk about the work that Pennsylvania is doing around the crisis of dying moms. The rate of maternal mortality reaches 3-4 times higher rates for Black Mommas over any other demographic. It was an honor to be invited and share the work we are doing with the PA Black Maternal Health Caucus with our friends in the state of Louisiana.
It was such a joy to participate in the panel discussion and experience the sheer elegance of watching our folks talk about the very issues that are plaguing our communities across the nation. Bravo to the Essence Festival 2025 for elevating the issues around maternal health and Black maternal health. Thank you to Perry Media and their amazing staff for including the PA Black Maternal Health Caucus and giving us an opportunity to share what we are doing in our commonwealth and how to get involved.

Celebrating Independence in Lansdowne and East Lansdowne
|
Last Friday my staff and I had a wonderful time celebrating the Fourth of July with you in East Lansdowne and Lansdowne! Both Boroughs hosted well-attended, energetic celebrations with parades and fun for all ages. I had the chance to speak at East Lansdowne's ceremony, where we honored the late former Mayor John Dukes. Thank you to the event organizers for putting together great events, and to all of you for attending!
East Lansdowne's ceremony is pictured above; Lansdowne's parade is pictured below.

Launching Penn Medicine’s New Mobile Mammography Van
|
Today, I had the honor of celebrating the ribbon cutting for Penn Medicine’s new mobile mammography van, a state-of-the-art mobile clinic with the latest 3D-mammogram technology. Ensuring our community has access to breast cancer detection and treatment is so important to me, and I’m excited for this mobile clinic to be available to the Greater Philadelphia area. Penn Medicine plans to schedule the van to attend health fairs, community events, wellness fairs, and to partner with businesses throughout the region, year-round. Speakers at the ribbon cutting included Pennsylvania Hospital CEO Alicia Gresham, MBA; Pennsylvania Hospital Chairman of Radiology Brian Englander, MD; University of Pennsylvania Health System CEO Kevin B. Mahoney, MBA; myself, and my colleague Rep. Morgan Cephas.
