Hello Neighbors, Community Members and Friends,
|
|
This morning, I stood with other leaders from our neighboring communities at Penn Wood High School to talk about the extreme financial crisis facing the William Penn School District.
As many of you know, the school district faces a $6 million budget deficit this year, despite a state-backed, phased funding increase. The pace of the increase is simply too slow, and the school district is considering a local tax increase to keep its doors open.
This just isn’t okay with me. This is educational injustice. Our students are not receiving the education and supports that they deserve. And their families are being asked to pay more when things don’t seem to be getting any better.
This week in Harrisburg my House colleagues and I voted – and passed – House Bill 1500, a cyber charter reform bill that changes the formula for how cyber charter funds are spent and saved and requires more transparency and accountability. The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration, and I am urging my peers there to see that bill through to the governor’s desk.
|
While we are reforming cyber charter schools, we are also calling attention to increased education funding in this year's state budget. The financial crisis facing the William Penn School District is not going to disappear without a comprehensive solution from the state legislature. I was proud to welcome the Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, state Rep. Jordan Harris, state Rep. Heather Boyd, state Sen. Tim Kearney and staff from the office of state Rep. Regina Young who all had very passionate words of support for WPSD!

Standing with CeaseFirePA in Harrisburg
|
This week at the Capitol I stood with CeaseFirePA to advocate for more funding for gun violence prevention programs. We recently lost a beautiful young soul to gun violence in Delaware County. One is too many. We should be aiming for none. Without more funds, we can’t implement the life-saving prevention programs we so desperately need.

Join Me for PA MOMNIBUS Day June 16!
|
Come support me and the PA Maternal Black Health Caucus for a day of advocacy at the state Capitol in Harrisburg on June 16! Building on the overwhelming success of our PA MOMNIBUS package in the previous legislative session, we’ve retooled and introduced the PA MOMNIBUS 2.0 for the 2025-26 legislative session.
PA MOMNIBUS Day 2025 will kick-off at 11 a.m. with a voting meeting of the House Health Committee where they are scheduled to consider two of the bills in our PA MOMNIBUS 2.0 – the PA Dads Matter Act and Expanding Maternal Blood Pressure Monitoring Coverage. You can also watch that meeting on YouTube.
Next, we’ll hold a news conference and rally in the Rotunda at 1 p.m. to deliver an update on the legislation priorities of the PA MOMNIBUS 2.0 and build support for our continued focus on improving birthing outcomes. You’ll also be able to watch a livestream of the news conference here.
Lastly, we’ll hold a reception at 4 p.m. in the East Wing Rotunda of the Capitol to connect with legislators, community leaders, maternal health advocates, supporters and health providers to strengthen support for maternal health equity.
Please let us know that you’ll be joining us! RSVP on our website – or plan to watch our events online!

Grand opening of new Share Food Program warehouse
|
It was my privilege to attend the ribbon-cutting of Share Food Program’s new food distribution warehouse in Ridley Township on Thursday. With the renovations to this building, both inside and out, this warehouse will improve logistics for the organization’s growing network of community partners throughout Delaware County and serve as a central hub for food distribution as the organization continues to address food insecurity so people can provide healthy meals for their family.
