E-Blast: Over $600K for two of our schools! Plus, community updates, and more.

Hello Neighbors, Community Members and Friends,

I’m excited to share with you that Bywood Elementary and Stonehurst Elementary of Upper Darby were awarded a collective $682,501 from the Pennsylvania Solar for Schools Program!

Solar for Schools awards grant money to reduce the costs of installing solar energy systems in PA schools. Bywood and Stonehurst will be able to use the funds toward purchasing, installing, and maintaining solar energy equipment.

Using solar energy at our schools is a sustainable and cost-effective way to keep the power on at our schools while having a positive impact on our environment. I can’t wait to see what our elementary-age students learn about sustainable energy while learning in a building powered by it. Congratulations to both schools!

My district office will be closing at noon on Fridays from today, May 30 through September 5. Please stop by during our usual hours, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, or before noon on Fridays. New Traffic Law Goes into Effect June 5

On June 5, law enforcement will start pulling over drivers using hand-held mobile devices while operating a vehicle – even if you’re paused in traffic or stopped at a red light. Paul Miller’s Law protects us all from distracted driving – put down the phone and keep your eyes on the road!

Memorial Day in Our Community!

On Memorial Day, I spent time out in the community taking in the many ceremonies hosted by our townships and veterans’ organizations. It truly is moving to see you all come together to honor the men and women of Delaware County who fought so hard for our freedoms. Thank you to Lansdowne, East Lansdowne, the Upper Darby Marine Corps League, and Archer Epler Post 979 for organizing these events and for taking the time to remember those we’ve lost.

Maternal Outcomes Matter Awards

Last Thursday, the CocoLife.Black and CEO Alexia Doumbouya honored me and my colleagues Reps. Morgan Cephas and La’Tasha Mayes with the Champions for Policy Award at their annual MOMbassador Awards. The evening recognizes maternal and public health advocates for their dedication to improving outcomes in Black maternal health in and around Philadelphia.

I’m so proud to be part of the PA Black Maternal Health Caucus and of the work that my fellow Reps and I have put into our Momnibus legislation. It is an honor to do this work, and I am so appreciative of CocoLife.Black for the recognition. Thank you.

Updates to My Alma Mater – Go Hawks!

Earlier this week I had the chance to visit my alma mater – Saint Joseph’s University – to tour the new pedestrian underpass on campus. The underpass allows students to safely cross from one side of City Avenue to another and is ADA-accessible. The new pathway, called Post Crossing, was a much-needed safety improvement for the campus.

A Visit to Bartram’s Garden

I was so happy to see all of you who came to our Mobile Mammogram clinic with state Sen. Tim Kearney and Jefferson Health! Breast cancer screenings and care are a top priority for me and I’m proud to have been able to provide this service to our community. Thank you to everyone who came and put their health first!

Business Development and Networking Dinner

On Wednesday I hosted a business development and networking dinner, and I it was great to see so many of you come meet your business-owner neighbors and learn about how to help your business thrive. Supporting our small businesses is important to a strong local economy and I hope you access the valuable resources shared at our dinner.

One highlight was hearing from SCORE Chester and Delaware Counties. SCORE is an organization that connects small business owners with mentors who help them with advice on best practices and business education. You can find a mentor through SCORE, or you can volunteer to become a mentor. This is a great way to get involved in your community!
