E-Blast: Requesting a criminal investigation into Prospect Medical Holdings, resources for health workers, upcoming events and more

Hello Neighbors, Community Members and Friends,

Today, Crozer Health System shuttered their final hospital in Delaware County. This is a tragic and devastating loss for our community and the communities around us. Not only are we facing a severe lack of essential and emergency health services, but we’ve also lost one of the largest employers in our county.

So many of us will now struggle with job loss as well as health needs, all because a for-profit company couldn’t keep their doors open. It’s a reality that will impact us immediately and for years to come.

My colleagues and I continue to push for results for everyone affected by this. Earlier this week, the Delaware County Legislative Delegation asked the Attorney General to open a criminal investigation into Prospect Medical Holdings’ current and former owners, and to push for extended ambulance coverage at Crozer Chester Medical Center and the return of the $40 million invested in Prospect since January.

You can read more about our goals in these articles by the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Delaware County Times.

Know that my staff and I are here for you during this time. If you need assistance or guidance on what to do next, please don’t hesitate to call my office at 610-259-7016.

Understanding the Opioid Crisis

Last week, my District Office Director Cintia Isles attended a Community Town Hall – Street Talk Workshop about the opioid crisis and pathways to recovery. It was hosted by UDTJ and Savage Sisters Recovery. This impactful event featured a panel including Recovery Works and Upper Darby School Board Director Damien Warsavage.

Attendees received updated statistics on the opioid epidemic, participated in overdose response training, and gained critical insight into local recovery efforts. It was an incredibly valuable town hall focused on healing, awareness, and action.

UDTJ is a local organization dedicated to bringing awareness and resources for BIPOC and LIGBTQQIA+ individuals in Delaware County – they’re also the founders of the Delco Pride!

Honoring the Underground Railroad in Delco

Did you know the Underground Railroad had stops throughout Upper Darby and Drexel Hill? Last Thursday, Upper Darby Mayor Edward Brown unveiled a new historic marker at the location of Holy Child Academy, which was once known as Riverview House. Riverview House was the home of abolitionist Thomas Garrett, who helped over 2,700 enslaved people escape to freedom.

You can find other Underground Railroad stops throughout our community along this walking tour.

Fighting Hunger in our Community

On Friday, I got to spend a lovely evening with Murphy’s Giving Market, a volunteer organization that serves people in poverty throughout Upper Darby and its surrounding neighborhoods. In March of this year, they helped feed 1,787 people – 677 of whom are children. Murphy's Giving Market just celebrated their 5-year anniversary.

I had the honor of being recognized by Murphy’s Giving Market for my hunger advocacy, alongside Loree Jones Brown of Philabundance and Michael D'Angelo, Murphy's Giving Market's own volunteers. I had the even greater honor of presenting a House citation to the organization and Ms. Phyllis Lamar, Murphy’s Giving Market’s pantry manager, for their tireless efforts to bring food to our most vulnerable communities. Thank you for all that you do!

Community Baby Shower – Be the Village!

Saturday I was back out in the community, this time to speak at the Delaware County Black Caucus’s Community Baby Shower, a fantastic event that focused on Black maternal health and wellness. We heard from speaker Dr. Renee Wynn, DNP, CRNP, WHNP-BC, and tapped into local resources on infant nutrition, breastfeeding, postpartum care and mental wellness. Expecting families also received baby care essentials for when their new additions arrive!

Reopening of the Lansdowne Theater

This weekend I also had the opportunity to tour the historic Lansdowne Theater, which is set to reopen to the public as a music venue this coming fall. The theater first opened its doors in 1927 but closed down in 1987. It’s been restored through a $19 million project spearheaded by The Historic Lansdowne Theater Corp.
