Hello Neighbors, Community Members and Friends,
This week I was out in Pittsburgh to celebrate the 3rd annual PA Black Maternal Health Week!
On Monday, we kicked off the week with plenty of events! We started the summit with two listening sessions. The first with Secretary of Drug and Alcohol Dr. Latika D. Davis-Jones to discuss how we can support moms with substance use disorder or in recovery. The second session was with Secretary of Human Services Dr. Valerie Arkoosh and state Rep. Mayes to discuss Dads and Black Maternal Health.
Later on, we had a welcoming and main stage conversation with Lt. Gov. Davis, state Rep. Aerion Abney, and others.
We also held an opening reception!
Tuesday was the heart of the week both in schedule and impact! We held a policy hearing on Midwifery Modernization and Maternal Health Deserts, a press conference on raising awareness and bringing action, a keynote luncheon, and a main stage panel calling on everyone in the Commonwealth to bring action to Black Maternal Health. The lunch panel featured us having a discussion with Pittsburgh base Digital Influencer Demi Schweers; and Charles Johnson from 4Kira4Moms who lost his wife to a c-section. The call to action panel included Secretary of Health Dr. Debra l. Bogen, Insurance Commissioner Michael Humphreys, Pittsburgh Regional Office Director of PA Human Relations Commission Dr. La Dawn Robinson, and Evirta Marsh, a representative from the Department of Corrections.
On Wednesday, we held a Brunch and Learn on Delivering Justice focused on Black Midwifery and Obstetric Racism. I joined Rep. Mayes at a policy hearing at Beverly’s Place to tour and have a roundtable discussion around newborn support. We also got to pack newborn kits! Lastly, we unveiled a real MOMNIBUS that will be commuting on the streets of Pittsburgh!
