Conklin bill to ensure safety of state inspector general officers unanimously advances through state Senate

HARRISBURG, October 21 – This week, legislation (H.B. 36) sponsored by state Rep. Scott Conklin unanimously advanced through the Pennsylvania Senate.

The legislation would authorize enforcement officers employed by the Office of State Inspector General to carry firearms in the performance of their official duties after completing basic firearms training. Under the bill, enforcement officers must complete both basic firearms training and annual firearms training as approved by the state inspector general.

House Bill 36 passed the House March 18, 2025 by a 173-29 vote, and advanced through the Senate State Government Committee on June 30.

“These officers work in close alignment with law enforcement, fighting against fraud, waste, misconduct and abuse in state programs and government agencies,” Conklin said. “Often, this means that officers are placed in dangerous situations, and this bill would allow them to execute their duties with the utmost safety. I thank the Senate for looking out for these officers, and I’m excited to see it soon written into state law.”

House Bill 36 now heads to the governor for further action.
