Burns: Extra local opportunities to prepare for Real ID
Rep. Frank Burns March 12, 2025 | 10:08 AM
HARRISBURG, March 12 – State Rep. Frank Burns said today that the Johnstown Driver License Center will be open on March 24, April 14 and May 5 to help people interested in obtaining a Real ID driver’s license or photo ID.
The Johnstown Driver License Center, 563 Walters Ave., is not typically open on Mondays, but it will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on these three Mondays to verify and image documents for people who wish to apply for a Real ID.
“The enforcement start date for the federal Real ID program is just over a month away and I don’t want anyone to be caught off guard, which is why I’m encouraging anyone interested in getting a Real ID to consider visiting the Johnstown Driver License Center on one of these days to have their documents verified and scanned into the system,” Burns said. “After doing that, a person can expect to receive their Real ID in the mail in about 15 business days.”
Getting a Real ID is optional in Pennsylvania, but beginning May 7, Pennsylvanians will need a Real ID-complaint license or other form of federally acceptable identification to board domestic commercial flights, enter a military base, or enter certain federal facilities that require a federally acceptable form of ID.
The Real ID has a one-time fee of $30, and the expiration date on an initial Real ID product will include any remaining time on an individual’s current non-Real ID driver’s license or photo ID card.
A list of acceptable documents needed to apply for a Real ID can be found here: Real ID Document Check | Driver and Vehicle Services | Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
