Markosek bill to allow communication impairment designation on driver’s license

HARRISBURG, July 7 – State Rep. Brandon Markosek, D-Allegheny, has introduced a bill to allow individuals the opportunity to include a communication impairment on their driver’s license and opt to also include that designation on electronic records filed with PennDOT.

“I introduced this bill to help ensure easier interactions between law enforcement and drivers with a communication impairment,” Markosek said. “By recognizing a designation on the driver’s license of an individual with a communication impairment, an officer can appropriately adjust and communicate effectively with the driver.”

Markosek, a legislator who speaks with a diagnosed speech impediment, said his bill would give the option for a designation to people who may have communication impairments, including individuals with autism, those who are deaf or hard of hearing, and individuals with a speech impairment.

House Bill 1700 is currently in the House Transportation Committee.
